Preakness Stakes day, 2012

May 21st 2012 10:00 pm |

I was lucky enough to be among the 121,309 people who packed into the Pimlico Race Course on Saturday for Preakness Stakes day. The Maryland Jockey Club put together two great days of racing on Friday and Saturday capped off by the Preakness Stakes. The Preakness was as good an edition that we have seen in quite awhile.

I’ll Have Another’s win on Saturday means we will have another try at the Triple Crown at Belmont Park on June 9th, the eleventh attempt since the last Triple Crown winner in 1978. Of course, logic tells us that I’ll Have Another will fall short, but the racing fan’s heart believes otherwise. Count me as a believer. Considering his last two wins, I’ll Have Another has what it takes to be number twelve. I will be in the house on Belmont Day and, needless to say, I am looking forward to it. Few things in racing can match the atmosphere of Belmont Park when the Triple Crown is on the line.

My public picks to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes have finished seventh and tenth. If you happened to have a smudge on your computer monitor that covered Went the Day Well as my Preakness selection, you would have hit the trifecta. I picked I’ll Have a Another, Bodemeister, and Creative Cause to finish second, third, and fourth. They finished first, second, and third. Went the Day Well went the day wrong on Saturday — he ran off from his stable pony in the post parade and finished second to last. His jockey John Velazquez told reporters after the race that his horse tired on the backstretch. Oh well… I will be rooting for I’ll Have Another in the Belmont but I’m leaning towards Dullahan as my selection to win. I will have over two weeks to over-think that one.

I had a great spot to watch the Preakness and was able to snap a couple of good photos. Pimlico on Preakness day is a great day for racing and we had a blast at ‘Old Hilltop’ on Saturday:

Our friends at NYRA have a contest that includes airfare, hotel, and tickets to the Belmont Stakes. The contest is free to enter, just click on the banner at the top of the page.

Thanks for reading and good luck!
