Past Posting: The Santa Anita Handicap

Mar 8th 2014 03:56 pm |

This year’s Santa Anita Handicap has all the elements of a real classic.  The field is headlined by two of the best older horses in the country — Mucho Macho Man and Will Take Charge — trying to grab the early lead for Horse of the Year honors and a fine California steed — Game on Dude — hoping to prove he belongs among the nation’s elite runners. Game on Dude would be the first to win the Big Cap three times should he upset the top two. He is also trying to shake the reputation that he is the best of a meager bunch of California-based runners and a tier below the likes of Mucho Macho Man and Will Take Charge.

Thankfully, the connections for all three horses decided to skip the ridiculous trip to Dubai to run in a race with a real history and, in my opinion, more meaningful in the grand scheme of things. Let’s hope they all stay healthy and meet a few more times in 2014. It has been awhile since we had a good rivalry in the older division.

Here is an article I published a few years back about Citation’s Big Cap in 1950: Citation beaten in the Big ‘Cap, 1950

I also did a Ten Things You Should Know about the Santa Anita Handicap for our pals at Hello Race Fans. Check it out: Ten Things You Should Know: Santa Anita Handicap

Good luck and enjoy the race today!

And a classic it was! Game On Dude has pulled the spotlight back onto the older-horse division.
